USS Defiant vs Y Wing Squadron

Honestly? The Defiant is a capital ship. And a battleship at that. It would make short work of a Y-Wing squadron.

Bull crap. smile.gif From what I know the Defiant class are classified as "escort destroyers". Classifying the DC as a battleship is equivalent of classifying YT-huh.gif (whatever the Millennium Falcon is) as a Stardestroyer. smile.gif Besides, do you think that the Y-wings will all stay in one spot in front of the Defiant? Space combat is in 3-D. The Defiant will have to contend with the bombers in every direction. The Defiant will go down from a torpedo barrage.

I doubt a Y-wing carries enough torpedoes for them to become a problem. wink.gif

In any case, I see no reason the Defiant shouldn't take this one. You're pitting fighters versus a small-sized capital ship. The Defiant has the firepower to destroy fighters in a one-hit-one-kill fashion, shields that would be able to cope with Y-wing firepower (unless we're talking extremely large proton torpedo spams.) And on top of that the Defiant is about as maneuverable, even though significantly larger.

Actually, Styroks, if the Y-Wings are the ones seen in the Clone Wars animated series, the Defiant's even more maneuverable.

Remember we're talking about fighters having trouble evading a slow moving pulse from an Ion cannon...

The combat depends on how smart you play it. You can take out the defiant class with Y wings, if you do it right.

1:) Ion blasters are just as effective on trek ships and shields as sw ones in which case it can knock out the ship, like the bree did.

2:) If not, assuming they can adjust to the shields and just bring them down then you can corral in the defiant and use hypespace jumps(if possible) to cut it off and shoot it down. (this also assumes you disable the warp drive but leaving means it looses anyhow)

I can see the Nebulon-B tracking the Defiant, releases the Y-wings (why the Ys and not A or X wings I do not know), the squadron would do a quick hyper jump to the Defiant's location, unleash everything including the kitchen and then hyper out of the Defiant's reach. Bonus if they do a flank attack. Hyper out when the Defiant turns to meet then and then again attack it's rear. I think the rebels would call this Operation Ass-Banging. smile.gif

This is very true. Lets not forget, the Defiant can cloak as well.

First off, Hyper jumps aren't instantaneous in SW (at least, not in any movie).

Secondly, while they're "unleashing everything", the Defiant will be fighting back, and hitting quite hard indeed, the "one shot one kill" kind of hard, so I don't see this going too well for the Y-Wings.

I'm not even sure they'd be wishing for a second round.

Thirdly, while the first attack may indeed be a surprise, the others won't, and the ship will be expecting it.

But even a first, surprise attack would not necessarily do much damage.

The Defiant's armor alone stood up to ST capital ship fire when her shields went down, and for quite some time. She's not a fragile ship...

And as Tyralak mentioned, it can cloak...

1) Says who? Remember the Breen energy dampening device that looked a lot like an ION cannon shot?

Remember the shield modifications made to Federation ships that made them impervious to the weapon later on?

Who's to say this doesn't make it impervious to an ION cannon as well?

2) See my responses to Enigma...

forgot to add an "if". rofl.  didn't forget to add it in 2. If they cannot adjust and go past shields and cripple defiant with ion guns. well. then i don't know.

I would also give it to the USS Defiant. Because Y wings take out with two hits by tie fighter. USS Defiant has to do fire photon torpedoes were longer number Y wings are then set off subspace detonator.

Without doing any calculations

Stop right there.

Without doing any calculations? What? Are you serious?

This is the same exact kind of bullshit we've had to deal with from Graham Kennedy and RSA. The first instance someone says they're not bothering with calculations is the moment they admit that they just don't really want to bother, and instead would rather waste my time with unsupported bullshit claims.

Go back, do the math, learn to actually fucking debate, then we'll talk.

Y wing poor maneuverable and it is very low compare to other one man fighters. USS Defiant is fast and very maneuverable. So one on One a Y wing not have fight chance. However Y wing Squadron of about 12 fighters be not be a fair fight. USS Defiant could keep distance destroy fighters one by one. Because Defiant class starships faster and more maneuverable than a Y wing. Only way Y wing squadron have chance is if sensors a defiant class starship are off line . One Y wing iron cannon would not have the strength to disable a Defiant class starship. It just to smell however 6 Y wings going fire iron cannons might have strength 12 Y wings fire iron cannon would most likely have the strength. Then could stable Defiant class starship in the back.

Without doing any calculations, I'm betting the Defiant wins.

What say you?

Yeah there's your first mistake.

You're entering into a debate where, like it or not, people do calculations. I know, the temptation to do it all by gut feeling and intuition is strong. I do it all the time. You look at a bunch of fighter craft and then something bigger and stronger like the Defiant, which spends all its time taking down big Dominion and Cardassian cruisers all day long and naturally you want to say Defiant.

But the thing is blahblah Star Wars firepower calcs, we've seen proton torpedoes do some pretty good damage such as in TCW, and yeah I say the Y-Wings, and I'm also going to say get used to a lot of calcs being thrown around like math porn.

Some math is better than no math, after all, otherwise you end up with engineering outsourced to our biggest strategic adversary while everyone lines up to kiss their sphincters.

Both right, however, I would like to point to some proof that you can join in on the debate without doing any calculations. *points to self* Just can't start topics like this, and you must stay away from the hardcore number crunching threads. You have to debate canon and the validity of material as well evaluate competency of characters from and different battle tactics. Stuff like that. 'course everyone will always point and laugh at you if you try, but it's not all bad. tongue.gif

Well, true. Not everyone is a math geek. And not everything in this debate revolves around math. Sometimes people get lost in analyzing the minutia of calculations and lose sight of common sense and the big picture.

The big picture being that the Defiant get recycled into tin cans. smile.gif See! And I didn't use math whatsoever!

Good God that asshat StarDestroyerAvenger posted in this thread? And I fucking agreed with him?

USS Defiant can fire phasers and photon torpodoes in the backwards beyound there is very a lot more maneuverable then Y wing. To make matter worst Y wing Squadron the USS Defoamt has senser jaming systoms seem cause great amount problems to the Jem'Hadar attack ships. A Nebula Class starship can hit smell shuttlecaft I think a Defient class starship would have easy time knock out a Y wing Squadron.

Y-wings have crippled the Malevolence, blown up 825m frigates and almost blown up the Death Star, clearly an entire squadron is overkill against the tiny Defiant

yeah

Which episode? I just picked up the complete first season today. $30 at Target. Not too bad. I intend to spend some time catching up.
