Khas 12,158 Posted May 27, 2010 Not exactly what normally goes on in here, but I didn't know where else to put it. During the Russian Revolution, the side that supported the czars were called the "Whites". The communists were the "Reds". The Galactic Empire is a monarchy (granted, one that came about through political upheaval, and with a very short dynasty, but a monarchy nontheless), while the UFP is socialist. The Imperial Stormtroopers wear white, just like those in favor of the czars were called "whites", and Starfleet's Redshirts wear red (no duh), just like the socialists/communists in the Russian Revolution were called "reds". Is there deeper meaning to "Redshirts vs. Stormtroopers" rather than it being just "cannon fodder vs. cannon fodder", or do I just think too much?
Airlocke 12,014 Posted May 27, 2010 It's possible. From some things that I have read, Lucas definitely got some inspiration from Trek for his series...possible, not likely.
Questor 501 Posted May 27, 2010 The redshirt cliche comes from an era where the Federation was aggressively capitalist. The utopian communism was something Roddenberry brought in in TNG (And maybe a little in TMP), but it was not present in TOS or in the TWoK era movies. Interestingly, the 10+ years between TMP and TWoK and the time between TFF and TUC are some of the emptiest time periods in the entire show. We don't even have a hint of what was going on. We can certainly reconstruct some of it. At some point, Kirk was appointed head of either Starfleet Academy or the Command School. (Which are different). Spock became the Enterprises official CO while she was a training ship.

Redshirt more fan word anything else. Attention IDIOT! He's specifically talking about the symbolism of the RED shirt. I pointed out that he is drawing a false parallel because by the time the analogy he wanted to use actually applied, the "redshirts" wore yellow. EDIT: As an aside, the historical parallel for the Imperial military should be quite obvious. The visual similarity of the non-stormtrooper personnel to these guys should be obvious: And if you need me to tell you what the derivation for the name "Stormtrooper" is, I can recommend a number of very interesting works. Jason 27 Posted May 27, 2010 No symbolism Star Terk even during TNG they had more in common EU then with Maxist dream world. They still get things for thier work just not in money. Like right use holodeck or other funs things or having own ship like saw minors have. Star Wars EMpire in pratice is more like militry dictorship like Iraq used to be US invade. Neither have anything do with Russia history in a real form of Symbolism.
Tyralak 12,068 Posted May 27, 2010 Don't be so damn literal, Jason. This is a thought experiment.
