Khas 12,158 Posted December 22, 2012 That Babylon 5 is less massive than the Great Pyramid of Giza? It's true. According to one of B5's intros, the station's mass was "two and a half million tons". The mass of the Great Pyramid of Giza is 5.5 million tons. Babylon 5 is said to be 5 miles long. Geez, did they build that station out of used tissues, or something? Khas 12,158 Posted December 22, 2012 Yeah, most of it is hollow. Still, it is 5 miles long.
scvn2812 504 Posted December 22, 2012 I'd be interested to see what we might be able to compare it to, density wise. Its not intended to be a warship so I wonder if it would compare more to the ISS or the old Russian station whose name escapes me at the moment.

If you rearranged Mir's modules into a straight line the station would be about 70-odd metres long, with a mass of 130 tons. Scale that up to 8k and it would be about 140 million tons. JMS could have done with adding another order of magnitude or two to B5's mass.

Ado Mortumee 500 Posted December 23, 2012 Wow. 5 miles long and only 2.5 million tons? Did they buy Titanium-A from the UNSC or something? Still, JMS did do a better job than Halo: Beta probe cycled back. The mass was still there and as solid as before. It was the largest reading Ensign Lovell had ever seen: twenty thousand tons. That couldn't be a Covenant ship--they didn't get that big. - Page 137, TFoR It turned out to be 4 Covenant warships: 1x Carrier (1455 meters long) 1x Destroyer (1500 meters long) 2x Frigates (1000 meters long)
