Sith vs. Dark Jedi

Recommended Posts

Thought you guys might find this interesting. Just found a detailed description of the difference between a Sith and a dark Jedi, as given by an Old Republic Jedi Master in one of the Darth Bane books.

The Sith were Sworn enemies of the Jedi and the Republic. They sought to wipe us from exsistence; they sought to rule the galaxy..........A Dark Jedi, on the other hand, has much smaller ambitions. He-or she-thinks only of himself. He acts alone. The ultimate gaol is not galactic conquest, but personal wealth and importance......he revels in cruelty and selfishness. He preys upon the weak and vulnerable, spreading misery and suffering wherever he goes.

Basically, the difference is the same as the difference between a real life villain and a comic book supervillain. There you have it. Sith are comic book supervillains. No wonder they are so fucking cool.

It's hard to get a straight answer out of Wookiepedia about the Sith. It's like "Sith" is just a label. The Sith race (Red Sith) died out long ago.

More than just label but a way of life? It isn't strict as to who claims to be one but if those that claim to be a Sith were to find out about each other then soon it would be down to one. smile.gif

Besides, claiming to be a Sith is usually bad for one's health. Other than those who also claim to be one, the galaxy on the whole would frown on such claims and the Jedi would want a word with him or her. smile.gif

I'm talking about Sith history long before the fairly recent "Rule of One". Not to mention in post-Imperial times. From the articles I read, it seems like it's a banner different groups take up every few years. The actual Sith race is long gone though.

True. Sith race itself may be gone but maybe not their ideals? If someone acted upon it then they'd be considered a Sith? The rule of One\Two was made so that the dark side of the Force would be more potent in the hands of one or two as opposed to thousands of Jedis?

Bah. The actual race of Sith were not actually a Force cult. Not at first. Not until those dark Jedi dropped in......

Not quite. From the Wookiepedia article Red Sith:

The Sith were a species of proud and violent humanoids [4] that evolved on Korriban, a planet within the Horuset system in an isolated Outer Rim region called the Stygian Caldera.[7] Sith had a larger than average number of individuals able to use the Force in their species,[8] so high in fact that the entire species[4] was considered strongly[9] Force-sensitive.[4] This abundant Force-sensitivity resulted from a symbiotic relationship with the dark side of the Force,[10] where they—like the other few creatures that inhabited the planet[7]—derived sustenance directly from the dark side,[7][10] and empowered it in turn.[10]

The rest of the article is tl;dr, however, I read it in it's entirety the other day along with all other articles related to "Sith". Seems like the writers couldn't make up their minds.

Over at SDN, someone made a topic asking why the Empire fell after RotJ. After a few posts Darth Tedious asked if Vader could have kept the Empire together and Darth Hoth replied with the following quote.

His purpose was to keep the Empire firmly in his own hands. While he may at one point have been prepared to hand it over to a successor, his cloning magic made certain that this would no longer be necessary.

Incidentally, Palpatine as portrayed in the DESB and assorted EU (before the prequels) was never a Sithian fanatic. Rather, he used the lore of the Sith, but without paying more than lip service to their heritage. They were just one more Force sect he studied, along with the Jarvashqiine, the Tyia, the Hereiarchs, and so on.

So Palpy isn't a Sith per se? It makes sense since he didn't stick to the Rule of Two. He had Maul and Dooku. Later the Emperor had Vader yet Vader had his own apprentice plus Palpy had Mara Jade "The Emperor's Hand".
