First question why leave open spot like first place unless USS Defiant did not have photon torpedoes destroy spot only one path Jem Harder go though it that case made sense Defiant just open fire. However this over simplified the case battle AR-588 and Sisko decide take last stand. 

Have been tactic reason why UFP left space open first place.

 

Real question what if Jem harder try cross another root clime   over the areas and then clime down. Sisko and his men no way know were come no realistic denied Jem Harder reason on it own right to use heavy automatic weapons. Sisko want to turn area into choke point he could just used mines do just go Jem Harder charge though area rather having go lots of movements as way lower numbers.
