I don't suppose Sybok(?) being a madman has anything to do with it...Probably not. I'm fond of the "Warp Highway" theory. It would make sense that there were certain corridors where warp speed was increased. In Star Trek V, it was stated that no ship or probe had returned from the galactic core. Implying that there had been other attempts, and travel there was possible.

I was just watching the X Files with my family and was blown away when a UFO flies over a group of alien rebels. There's an electric hum, some panels on the bottom light up and the aliens are incinerated with no visible beam as if someone stuck them in front of the business end of a weaponized microwave oven. Episode 111 if I recall correctly.I haven't seen the X-Files in a long time. Did they explain what kind of weapon it was?

Wow. That's a tall order.

That site shows the galactic core at 25,800 light years away from Earth. It's interesting that this site goes into a lot of detail about other inconsistencies in distances and rationalizes them, but there is no mention of Star Trek 5.

Will they be merged under a generalized VS title? Or under a title like "ST vs SW and other VS debates"?It would be more along the lines of "St vs SW and other VS debates"

I voted the way I did because I wanted to. There is my explanation.Well, duh.
-
I tend to agree. Thank you for elaborating. Also, those of you voting, please explain why you voted whichever way.

One of the most glaring examples of inconsistencies in Trek happens in Star Trek 5. The Enterprise managed to get to the center of the galaxy in a very short time, yet we know that in the entirety of previous and later Trek canon, Warp speed isn't anywhere near that fast. Case in point, Voyager needing 70 years to reach the Alpha Quadrant from the Delta Quadrant. How can this be reconciled? Especially since there was no special circumstances mentioned in the film, and nobody seemed to think it was out of the ordinary. Ideas?

In any sci-fi series that goes on for any length of time develops a certain amount number of inconsistencies and plot holes. Some are worse than others, so the purpose of this forum is to identify these issues, and look for ways within their respective canon to reconcile them. The rules in this forum are the same as the rest of the board.

I will be adding a new forum called "The Mental Gymnasium". It's a forum where we bend over backward to reconcile inconsistencies and plot holes in various sci-fi universes within canon. In doing this, I would like to avoid "board sprawl", (too many forums, too few posters) so I am asking for a vote on the following matter. Should I consolidate the Versus debates subforums into a single section, instead of having a separate Star Trek vs Star Wars section and Other Versus Debates section? I feel that this would increase the variety of topics by not requiring them to be pigeonholed into one section or the other. I will be adding the Mental Gymnasium tonight, I will give this poll a week before I make a decision on the consolidation.

This is an excellent topic, Sean. I'd be glad to move it to the appropriate forum.

William Shatner made a good point in an interview I just watched, it does seem like a bit too much consolidation for the two biggest scifi franchises to be under the thumb of the same director. It is playing with fire, IMHO.

I tried. YouTube removed it for "copyright" reasons. I managed to get DailyMotion to keep it up though.

I think I'll just leave this here....

What is this I don't even....

Some good points made in that video. I've always thought the idea of starfighters was kind of silly to begin with.

Force Scream is the name given to a Sith or Dark Jedi that channels his\her rage as a scream through the Force. Wookieepedia has several sources listing the effects of a Force Scream even if it wasn't mentioned by name. You mean like this?
-
Exactly. The story lines and tech are approved by CBS, and CBS views it is soft canon. Its the only game with that distinction as well. Game mechanics and player interactions, however obviously not included.
-
I agree with most of what you said here... but Force Scream is odd and silly. It's barely referenced' date=' and I would bet it's never actually mentioned by name anywhere. It's just a random Force Power that someone cooked up. The only interesting one was Jorus C'baoth, and he did something that I've seen other fictional villains do for dramatic reasons. [/quote']I wonder if the "Force Fart" is referenced in any EU material. I'm sure KJA wrote about it somewhere....

While single Galaxy class starship fire something 20 photon torpedoes a second include front side and the back side. Something like 60 a minute so 2 minute Galaxy class starship like fire 120 photon torpedoes.ISD is big does having gun face forward. Mean Galaxy class starship likley easily just stay tail. Please point all time Star destroyer target something while behind it.
You brought up a good point, Jason. I don't think I've ever seen an ISD fire aft. Certainly not below.

In terms of watts dissipation, what is the generally agreed upon shield strength of a galaxy class star ship in the trekkie universe?I don't know if there is one. I've never seen any concrete data. Especially since there are a wide variety of weapon types in Trek. There are NDE weapons (Phasers, Disruptors, etc) Thermal DET weapons, Even more exotic particle weapons (Antiproton, Tetryon, etc) Trek shields don't seem to have much problem holding up against thermal weapons, They do well against NDE weapons, and not so well against the super strange/exotic kind. That's not even bringing explosive weapons into it. Nuclear weapons are easily handled by the shields, (Hell, they're easily handled by an unshielded hull as we saw in BoT) Photon Torpedoes, Quantum orpedoes, Chroniton Torpedoes, Transphasic Torpedoes, Subspace weapons (Banned by treaty) all react against shields differently. It really is a mixed bag.

Nice. This is cooler, though. (Linked from the same article)

Turbolasers travel MUCH slower than light, so the effect must be profound.

I'm very excited about this technology, and have actually been following it. Google comes up with some amazing out there ideas. However, although I'm sure there are some Trekkies at Apple, it's a well known fact that Picard uses Android.
