  1. I was able to see this movie at the IMAX opening night back in May. I have to say, at first I had reservations, but I went into it with an open mind, and really enjoyed it. I thought the acting, for the most part was really good. Chekov was annoying, but that's really the only complain I had. The casting was pretty good as well. Quinto made a great Spock, and Karl Urban WAS Bones. I mean, dead on accurate. The soundtrack is what really got my attention. The score was fantastic. For those of you who haven't seen it yet, I won't reveal any spoilers, but the massive change in the Trek universe made near the end of the movie took a serious pair of brass balls to attempt. I fully intend to buy it on DVD when it comes out. I may even break down and buy a Blu-Ray player and get it on BD.

  2. OK. Well, here's a couple.

Use either canned biscuits or premade pie crust, or whatever. Line the bottom of the pie plate and save some for the top.

This is kind of a pizza flavored pot pie

    Cooked hamburger

    1 jar pizza sauce

    Add whatever veggies you want

    Cover with cheese

    Bake 350 for 20 mins

The next one is a roast beef pot pie

1/2 lb - 1 lb of roast beef

Part or all of a jar of gravy

Any veggies, salt pepper, garlic or onion would be good.

    Bake 350 for 20 mins.

  3. Good to see you here, Gary. This is a copy and paste from the old ASVS FAQ on the SF Debris site about this:

    The Official ASVS FAQ

    B. Why bother debating this?

      1. Don't you people have a life?

      2. Don't you get it? None of it's real!

      3. Why are you even arguing because Star Trek/Wars sucks anyway?

      4. Why can't you understand that both shows are good in their own ways?

    1. Don't you people have a life?

        * Of course we do. The people who discuss in this group cover many different walks of life: high school students, college students, graduate students, working professionals in a wide variety of careers and scattered over every continent except Antarctica (and one of our denizens has actually been there, so quite the globetrotters be we). In other words, this is not a collection of geeks: these are real people who just happen to enjoy talking about this subject; and no we're not wearing pointed ears or stormtrooper helmets.

    2. Don't you get it? None of it's real!

        * Of course it's not real. No one is disputing this. This is just a technical discussion of fiction, no different than fantasy football. You discuss as if it is real, even though you know it is not.

    3. Why are you even arguing because Star Trek/Wars sucks anyway?

        * You are entitled to your opinion. However, other people have the right to their opinion too. A well-thought out opinion will be respected; stupidity will be mocked for what it is.

    4. Why can't you understand that both shows are good in their own ways?

        * Many people do like both Star Trek and Star Wars. Some prefer one, and some the other. Still others like what Trek/Wars used to be and hate what it is now. Personal opinions vary. But just because someone argues against Trek doesn't mean they hate Trek. Ditto for Star Wars.

  4. This is the place to get your work out there for everyone to see. The sub forums are organized by author. If you wish to submit a story,  use the following format in the title: Title Author Type Status. Status is to indicate if it's a complete story, or a chapter in an ongoing story. ( C ) will mean complete (I) will mean incomplete. if it contains any sort of adult themes, please include NSFW in the title. Example: Robbie and the Beanstalk - Tyralak - Humor - ( C ) - NSFW

After you submit your story, I will create a sub forum for you in the Story Vault. You will have control of the content in that sub-forum. Nobody other than you (And mods/admins of course) will have the ability to post and make changes. This way you have complete control of your work and the ability to alter and/or remove stories as you see fit.

I don't suppose you'd be interested in a hamburger pot pie recipe would you?

  6. This is a repost of an article I wrote a while back. I still stand by it.

After looking back at years of denials, excuses and FUD from Warsies about why a canon episode, TDiC (DS9 "The Die is Cast") should be ignored, I can't find a scrap of logic in the claims. Let's look at a few myths, and then the facts.

Warsie myth # 1: "The visuals didn't show the kind of damage reported by the sensors."

The facts: The visuals show little of anything. They show a planet with gigantic ripples covering it's surface. Are we to expect close ups of the planet's surface to confirm what the sensors said and the limited visuals suggest? The show DID have a budget, after all.

Warsie myth # 2: "The Founders were broadcasting false sensor readings, and this shows the sensors data to be unreliable."

The facts: The false sensor data was ONLY in reference to life signs. Not to damage of the planet's surface. The false readings were to trick the Romulans and Cardassians into believing that the Founders were still on the planet. Once the Romulans discovered the ruse, there was no indication that the damage readings were also erroneous. We also have the inconvenient fact that the Romulans and Cardassians expected that kind of damage. That's the goal they were aiming for. When the damage reports came back, nobody was surprised. If this type of damage was outside the realm of possibility, the Romluans would have been tipped off immediately. If the Founders were broadcasting false damage readings, they would have been foolish to send out readings that were so far out of the realm of possibility. An example. A fighter aircraft fired a single missile at a target, say a small building, and the enemy had a way of sending back false damage pictures to surveillance satellites. The false imagery showed half the city destroyed by that missile. Does anyone really think the side that fired the missile would pat themselves on the back and say "Good job! That missile took out half the city!" when the missile only had the capability of destroying a small building? That wouldn't pass the test of logic, and neither does this Warsie myth.

Warsie myth # 3: "This doesn't fit with the rest of the combined canon as we see it."

The facts: Not only does this go against the rules of the debate, but it goes against several things that are indeed part of established canon. The rules of the debate say that with the exception of one-time devices that were destroyed and no longer exist,(Genesis, etc) you cannot try to exclude inconvenient evidence by trying to claim it doesn't fit with the rest of the series. Aside from that, it does fit with a part of the series that has been part of the canon since TOS: General Order 24. The destruction of the entire surface of a planet. A last resort.

Conclusion: As inconvenient to Warsies as TDiC is, it is still canon, and give the fact it's on screen, is actually a higher canon than the Warsie Bible, the ICS. The numbers in the ICS are given gospel status, even though there is still some dispute. Power levels for TNG ships should absolutely be reckoned, at least in part, by TDiC.

Honestly? The Defiant is a capital ship. And a battleship at that. It would make short work of a Y-Wing squadron.

You must have gotten it somewhere else. Logic doesn't exist in any abundance there.

  10. Welcome to ASVS! (alt.startrek.vs.starwars) Due to the unavoidable decline of Usenet, ASVS has been moved to the Web. The rules are basic and mostly common sense.

****NOTE: The only exception to the following rules is the Scifights.net Video Discussion Forum. It is an extension of Brian Young's Scifight.net site. He runs it as he sees fit, and the rules he sets goes.****

For the rest of the site, this is the list of things that are off limits, and will get you banned:

    1. Threatening the President. Even though I enjoy company, I do NOT want the Secret Service visiting me at my home.

    2. Linking to child porn or advocating pedophilia. If you are this kind of sick bastard, I don't want you anywhere NEAR my board. This is your warning. You will NOT get a second one.

    3. Threatening lawsuits, legal action etc. Or threatening to damage this board. I don't have any patience for that.

    4. Real life threats and harassment. Most people know the difference between flaming and actual threats. If you are making real life threats against another member or their family members, that crosses the line.

    5. Real life info. Stalking people and revealing their real life info on the board is also not allowed. Please be careful with what kind of real life info you post. Including your full name, address, pictures, etc. In other words, people. Just use some common sense.

Some activities are frowned upon, but are not subject to banning. They may, however earn you a temporary vacation.

    1. Outing people's sock puppet/dual accounts without their permission.

    2. Causing the mods a lot of work by relentlessly spamming/flooding.

    3. This isn't a porn site, people. There are other places to find that stuff. Don't post it here. It WILL be removed.

    4. Publicly posting PMs sent to you from other members, IM discussions or any other private communications.

Just as ASVS has always been, this board is built on free and open debate. Heavy handed moderation is NOT allowed here. Just because someone is a mod/admin doesn't make them immune from flaming or debate. Mods and admins are like any other poster here, except that they help me out with running the board. That's it. Above all, NO WHINING. You can't back up your argument, and get flamed? Come up with a better argument! Don't go crying to a mod/admin.

Remember, that although ideas are not censored, this board is not a dumpster. Try to keep the discussion moderately civil.

Please keep in mind to be cautious when viewing this or any site for that matter from work. ASVS accepts no responsibility for you getting in trouble if you post from work. The content is mostly benign, however some things might slip through the cracks, or we might not see a post/thread right away. Once again, common sense is key.

    Thank you, and enjoy ASVS!
