The Versus thread to put all STvSW debates to rest
Questor replied to Sacrifyx's topic in Versus Debates
Erm... That wasn't supposed to be quoted, but the idea that ST has strategic speeds anywhere in the range of 10-100000xC is insane. Even the most drastic differences between strategic and tactical speeds are generally 2x. If you are going to say that ST's burst speeds (outside certain badly written episodes that make mathematical mistakes) are higher than about 2000xC, I'm going to have to ask for multiple sources AND valid resoning on why Voyager could not achieve those speeds long enoug to bring its average speed significantly higher than 1000xC. Basically (and I'm pretty sure I know the examples you'd use) I'm asking why the discrepancies exist, P.S., Anyone who thinks that Leelamd Chee's statement about that being the actual SW galaxy makes sense needs his head examined. -

Without taking a position either way, because I am away from high res copies of tesb at the moment, how are you doing the scaling? When an opportunity to exercise with real targets presents itself, why not have your gunners run some drills? because shields are progressive, because the combat shields might not have been up, because the captain doesn T like debris on his ship? -

Please tell me that this is a really bad joke. -
Its going to depend. In a fistfight, Pine's got a chance. Anywhere else, Shatner is going to take Pine to town. On the bridge of a starship, with their crewa behind them... Shatner kicks ass.

Its worse than that. In TNG era ST, the righteousness of the Federation became its religion. I like to guess that there was some sort of revolution between STVI and Encounter at Farpoint, some people argue that DS9 disproves that, but I disagree. Picard is an avatar of the ideal of TNG's Federation, and Janeway is the next generation. Janeway's generation of captains grew up with Picard as an example. They take the things that Picard agonized about and treat them as the word of god. Without understanding the WHY of Picard's decisions, they just take them at face value. Janeway regarded anything from the 20th century as "ancient" and often showed an ignorance of history. Sisko was a student of history, even more than Picard - whose education could be described as classical, or even eclectic - he was able to draw on the whole thing, and not just the cliff notes. His decisions were often much more nuanced than even later Picard. He understood that the Prime Directive was a guidline that could not possibly be enforced strictly, and that the situations MUST be evaluated on a case by case basis - just like Kirk did. I have much more sympathy for Archer. As much as I like seasons three and four of ENT, I have to admit that Archer was completely out of his depth. He was hamstrung by a crew that was not anywhere near the "Dream Team" that it should have been. I question why this is, and I suspect that perhaps the Vulcans had something to do with that. The Vulcans clearly wanted the Enterprise to fail, and the best way to do that would be to select a marginally stable, out of his depth, and unprepared captain, and then give him a crew that is not anywhere near the level he needs. T'Pol was not the equivilent of Spock or Data, or even Dax. She was assigned as a "commisar" more than as a science officer, and the fact that she didn't have an "airlock accident" as soon as Enterprise went to warp during "Broken Bow" is simply an example of how unprepared for the universe Archer and company were. He'll get to it.

You know this is about tricorders picking up personal cloaking devices. Except of course the ones used by fantasy-MACOs, of course.

A Maginot Sphere? Would that be a sphere I avoid by invading Belgium?

Wimp, what kind of weak Trekkie needs a break? A warsie wouldn't need a break.

Explain three ways that it should be possible to pick up a submerged ship that would not be relevant in any other situation.

THIS IS INCREDIBLY SIMPLISTIC. HAVE YOU EVER EVEN WATCHED THE MOVIES? THE NOSTROMO WAS THERE FOR A SPECIFIC REASON THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANY DISTRESS CALL. THERE IS ACTUALLY NO EVIDENCE IN THE MOVIE THAT THE DISTRESS CALL IS REAL. LOGIC, IN FACT, WOULD INDICATE THAT IT IS NOT, ESPECIALLY GIVEN WHAT FOLLOWS. EDIT: I'M GOING TO MAKE THIS EASIER FOR YOU. WHAT WERE ASH'S ORDERS? -

ANSWER THE QUESTION! WHAT WAS THE PRIMARY REASON THE NOSTROMO WAS ON LV-426? -

Questor replied to Jason's topic in Versus Debates
No, it wouldn't. You clearly DID NOT understand the movie Alien. Go back and watch the latest version and tell me exactly WHY the Notstromo showed up on the planet. The answer is not a distress call. -

1. I have no issue with your scenario. You modified the movie enough to make it semi-plausible (I'd make them Ferengi to make the profit motive more believable than in TNG humans. Just ask Picard, they just want to better themselves.) 2. The whole setup doesn't work in TNG because everything was a fake to get a larval alien into coldsleep to use for commercial purposes. (See above comment about Picard) -

Because you aren't an idiot, I'm going to deliberately ignore the fact that it should be obvious to anyone that I'm making comparisons to the multi-month cargo ship journeys. Are you implying that you think there is a difference on the level needed to make this situation work in any of those shows? You can't have it both ways, if ST has technology low enough to make this interesting, then they get their ass handed to them by just about every spacefaring universe.
