  1. Exactly. As Praeothmin said, the principles behind the technology of phaser and torpedoes hasn't changed much. They have obviously improved in effectiveness and power. It would be ridiculous to think otherwise.
Not necessarily B41 bomb ca.1960 25Mt compared to modern B83 bomb 1.2Mt. The B83 isnt even more efficient than a presumably ancient weapon designed in the 1950's.

Given that the UFP is run by pacifistic space hippies, it would seem to be entirely out of character for them to develop more powerful weapons, considering that the US and Russia havent, and both are much more militaristic than the UFP

  2. Are you quite certain this is the argument you want to push? I'll give you some time to reconsider before I reply.
The lack of anything clearly being ejected into space, and recognizable fireballs of sufficient duration clearly precludes any of the weapons operating through any DET method. At best they are operating under treknobabble of the highest order

  3. As was previously mentioned, how do they look from the top down? Especially from orbit.
Last I checked planets were spherical thus the ship could only be directly above one. the rest would be at a varying angle and look something like

Nukes? You see, last time I checked, Disrupters and Photon Torpedoes were not atomic weapons.

here we have a small kinetic impact, i guess they put a nuke in the asteroid

A multi teraton kinetic impact, i guess the fireball is from the nuke they planted there

Large explosions produce large fireballs which are quite lacking from TDiC
